  • Courageous PAs + Powerful PA Survey Results = Bold Forward

Courageous PAs + Powerful PA Survey Results = Bold Forward

For almost 10 years, the APDIM Program Administration Annual Survey has collected nationally representative data on internal medicine residency and fellowship program coordinators, managers, and associated administrative professionals. Developed by the APDIM Program Administrators Survey and Scholarship Committee, the survey provides trend data including but not limited to residency/fellowship program coordinator salaries, education level, workload and responsibilities, professional development needs, and outcomes such as screening for burnout. While the survey results have always been shared during the annual APDIM meeting, this workshop is designed to closely review the results with participants to help them take actionable steps to advance their career goals. This workshop provides opportunities to bold forward with the data results and get the additional support and advice on what to do with the data.

The world of graduate medical education can be confusing for new coordinators. Language used in ACGME, AAMC, NRMP, and ABIM is very specific to this field. Using the knowledge gained during part one of this workshop, participants will complete a hands-on, interactive learning experience, while applying the most commonly used phrases and acronyms in GME. (This is part two of a two part workshop.)

  • The Future, Year One: Recruitment Victories, Challenges, and Best Practices with ERAS-Thalamus

The Future, Year One: Recruitment Victories, Challenges, and Best Practices with ERAS-Thalamus

The AAMC announcement of its collaboration with Thalamus represents a sea change in the role of technology within GME's fundamental task of recruiting future generations of clinical physicians. It will not only impact the daily workflow for program administrators but also affect the recruitment experience for residency candidates and shape strategic planning at the institution and program-level. It may also provide program administrators with leadership opportunities as the ambassadors and educators for this new technology to their fellow coordinators, program directors, and GME offices. The timing of the conference affords a unique opportunity to examine and discuss the effects of the ERAS-Thalamus collaboration immediately following one completed internal Medicine residency recruitment season with the initial (optional for 2023) use of the Thalamus Core, Itinerary Wizard, and Cerebellum products. It is vital at this pivotal moment for programs to share information on any successes, hurdles, adjustments, and solutions they have encountered while implementing new technology within the recruitment process.

  • Synergizing Roles in Medical Education: Enhancing Scholarly Engagement between Program Directors and Administrators

Synergizing Roles in Medical Education: Enhancing Scholarly Engagement between Program Directors and Administrators

As the program administrator's role continues to evolve, one potential skill set is the production of scholarly activity. In the process of creating scholarly activity, it is important to evaluate the resources available, including support throughout the process. Many program administrators feel that only physicians, scientists, or learners are privy to this opportunity; however, with the support of other program leaders, program administrators can collaborate to produce posters, workshops, publications, and more. This workshop aims to continue the education on how a program administrator and other program leaders (i.e., program directors) translate an idea into scholarly activity. Participants will be educated on interpersonal-intrapersonal skills, identifying opportunities, and recognizing what incentives/recognition looks like in this process.

Professional Development - Make Them an Offer They Can't Refuse

As members of the Nuvance Health Learning Institute's Program Manager Development Committee for the last 2 years, we have spearheaded the professional development of the network's 7 hospital system consisting of 25 residency and fellowship program managers. In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of professional development for program managers including retention and job satisfaction. We will show the benefits of professional development to both the program managers as well as to leadership. We will share how to create a self-assessment survey for program managers in order to develop a didactic calendar. We will share, as example, our network's weekly development calendar. We will discuss two different ways of creating a mentorship program with lessons learned from our initial creation of our program. Finally, we will share various ways of incentivizing program managers to pursue professional development activities which are outside the realm of their daily job duties.
