Activating Health Systems Science Thinking in the Clinical Learning Environment: Utilizing Clinical Encounters to Identify Opportunities for Systems Thinking

Overview

Health systems science (HSS) is the third pillar of medical education, forming a structured approach to learning about how problems extend beyond those of individual patients to a larger perspective on patient care. Although systems thinking has been present in educational program objectives (EPOs) and ACGME milestones for some time, activating this knowledge in the clinical learning environment, while also trying to teach clinical medicine, can be difficult. This webinar will provide an opportunity to grow skills in activating HSS thinking in the clinical learning environment. Presenters will identify the core domains of HSS thinking and elucidate how they can be applied to patient scenarios in addressing issues such as safety and quality, ethics, and health care policy.
