Survey Success in Med Ed: Building Better Questions, Avoiding Common Mistakes
Date
2025-09-24
Overview
Surveys are a popular instrument in medical education used to better understand educational challenges, explore the perspectives of learners and educators, and evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions. The development of a robust survey instrument is a multi-stage process that can present significant challenges. Survey data can be limited by the survey's construct and design, potentially diminishing its utility in addressing the intended research question or in generating meaningful scholarship. The experience of the presenters, garnered through the development, review, and refinement of survey section submissions to the CDIM Survey and Scholarship Committee, offers valuable insights for the medical education community. This webinar will review the principles of medical education survey design and implementation, providing educators with tools to construct effective surveys. Presenters will cover the essential steps in survey development, including identifying when a survey is an appropriate tool, defining constructs of interest, designing the right number of sound survey questions, and avoiding common pitfalls. These principles are broadly applicable, whether designing a local survey or a section for the CDIM or APDIM national surveys. Presenters will share high-quality examples and common challenges as well asl describe the elements of a high-quality thematic survey section submission to a national survey.
