Burning the Candle at Both Ends: Burnout and Wellness in Fellowship Training
Date
2025-03-27
Overview
The epidemic of physician burnout has swept across the country, resulting in negative mental health outcomes among physicians, high turnover at the organization level, and both direct and indirect negative effects on patient safety and quality of care. Burnout is highest among trainees as compared to early career physicians, and in response, many training programs have developed initiatives to promote self-care and wellness more intentionally during pivotal formative training experiences. However, the vast majority of these initiatives target residents; comparatively little attention has been paid specifically to the unique aspects of burnout and wellness associated with specialty training. While fellowship promises trainees numerous additional opportunities for professional development, it also introduces many stressors that can negatively impact wellness. In this webinar, members of the ASP Fellowship Education Committee will review the literature on physician burnout with the aim of exploring the different aspects of wellness as they pertain specifically to learners pursuing specialty training. Presenters will also discuss potential strategies to augment and maintain the mental, physical, and professional aspects of wellness in fellowship training programs. Finally, presenters will share evidence-based best practices for cultivating a culture of wellness among specialty trainees and faculty, and share institution-specific innovations designed to target specific components of physician wellness among specialty trainees.Speakers
