Starting a New ACGME- Accredited Training Program: Roadmap 101

Anticipated physician shortages are staggering in the United States, specifically in areas with limited access. Expansion of residency positions across all specialties is needed to address this impending access crisis. Starting a new ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship subspecialty program is challenging and requires a significant commitment at all levels. Institutions desire a nationally competitive program that will train compassionate and competent physicians focused on evidence-based medicine and provide outstanding and safe patient care. Educators are drawn to creating a new ACGME-accredited program with its unique opportunity to build an innovative and educational vision within the ACGME requirements while promoting diversity and inclusion.

The accreditation process involves multiple steps and applications. Identifying stakeholders at the state and community level, within the institution, and within the certifying educational bodies and medical education organizations is crucial to a successful launch. This process involves three phases: preparation (system integration and buy-in), start-up (the application) and build-up (educational collaboration). This high-stakes endeavor presents several exciting challenges and opportunities. It requires commitment, dedication, adhering to timelines, engaging with various stakeholders (ACGME, NRMP, ERAS), navigating application submission, and diligent follow-up. This workshop will focus on understanding the unique advantages a new program has for building its portfolio, and outline a clear roadmap to successfully prepare, launch, compete and prosper as a new ACGME-accredited program. We will also engage participants to identify potential challenges and opportunities and develop concrete plans that can be leveraged towards increased reach, visibility, and success.
