Night Float Report - Not Your Grandma's Pearls
Many residency programs use a night float system to comply with residency duty hours. Residents often view night float as a "service" rotation that does not provide rich learning experiences or directed educational opportunities, partly due to being unable to participate in daytime didactic sessions such as morning report, noon conference, and attending teaching rounds. Although some programs offer dedicated teaching sessions for residents on night shifts (e.g. night float report), these sessions are often poorly rated for a variety of factors.
This interactive workshop will focus on how to develop a night float report in university and community-based programs that is engaging for both day and night residents. The workshop will be case-based and will describe the experience of revamping night float report at the presentershome institution). The workshop will identify strategies to include spaced-learning and repetition within night float report to enhance knowledge retention. The presenters will provide a framework for an interactive and engaging night float report that focuses on the most common clinical questions or management challenges faced overnight, instead of uncommon or "zebra" diagnoses.
