Leading the Charge in Practice Management: An Innovative Experiential Curriculum
Internal medicine residents are entering an increasingly complex practice environment upon graduation and need to be equipped with the skills to advance patient care by leading interdisciplinary teams and completing panel management. In our residency training clinic, residents have the opportunity to hone these skills as charge resident, a unique role that serves to lead the clinical flow of each clinic session and help increase confidence with the administrative tasks involved in ambulatory care. Residents receive instruction in team-based care and panel management prior to taking on the role of charge resident in the clinic and are evaluated in real-time through direct observation from faculty preceptors. These evaluations are linked directly to ACGME subcompetencies in practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, and interpersonal communication skills to help provide valuable input. Through this workshop, clinic faculty will learn how to implement the charge resident role within their ambulatory practices to teach and evaluate core skills in interdisciplinary teamwork and the practice of medicine.
