Juggling Hats - How to Rock Every Role You Play as a Medical Educator
Medical educators are increasingly tasked with a longer and longer list of roles to fill and "hats" to wear. They are often asked to evaluate, teach, advise, mentor, remediate, or coach the same learner. Wearing multiple hats can be confusing, and failure to define and choose hats with intention can lead to predictable pitfalls. In this workshop, we will teach "intentional hat choice" and give tangible skills to rock each hat. Using a reflective practice, we will help bring awareness to each participant's tendencies towards one hat in particular in conversations with learners. We will explore the coaching hat in depth, as it is a newer and increasingly validated role for medical educators. Drawing on a strong evidence base as well as personal experience as professional coaches, the presenters will guide participants through cases of learners who tend to benefit from coaching the most. Together, we will explore what it means to wear a "coach hat" and why this nonjudgemental, inquiry based approach is useful. Finally, we will share hands on tips and then practice them with each other to build adeptness around integrating a "coaching mindset" with ease.
