Hot Off the Press: Integrating the New Clinician Educator Milestones into Faculty Development Programming

Faculty development is a critical endeavor benefitting both faculty and trainees across the educational spectrum. Recently, clinician educator (CE) milestones were developed by ACGME in conjunction with other national organizations to outline competencies for CE faculty. These milestones highlight the expected progression of faculty from novice to expert stage in various realms that encompass their diverse CE roles with an intended audience of educators, educational leaders, and educational scholars. For example, milestone Administration 1 codifies behaviors that map to novice administrative skills all the way up to expert. Despite their face value, practical implementation of the 18 milestones is a new area of great opportunity.

Through facilitated large group discussion, presenters will identify major themes and summarize the milestones. The remainder of the workshop will include interactive, small groups in which attendees review case scenarios from the presenter's former experiences as a springboard to discuss the implementation of the milestones for faculty development. The case scenarios will focus on the themes of DEI, promoting wellness, and assessment identified in the milestones; discussions will include aspects of peer coaching, wellness, and mentoring across differences like generation/rank as well as race/ethnicity. The large group will reconvene to discuss take-home points and address challenges. By the end of the workshop, participants will create an individualized action plan with a new mental model for faculty development at their home institution using the newly developed milestones as a guide.
