Getting to "Yes?" and Mastering "No?": Evidence-Based Negotiation Skills for the Academic Internist

The necessity of navigating negotiations transcends both personal and professional daily life experiences. All negotiations are ultimately conversations and, like assessments, exist on a continuum from low to high stakes. Despite the ubiquitous nature of negotiations in our lives, few professionals in education or health care ever receive formal training to optimize their confidence and success in these dialogues. Additionally, many professionals experience challenges and frustrations with negotiations, but they rarely have opportunities to explore obstacles and debrief amongst peers.

In this workshop, we aim to provide skills development in negotiation for professional and personal lives. This workshop will highlight insights, pulling from diverse, multidisciplinary literature, to empower participants to approach negotiation with multiple lenses. We aim to support equity in negotiation by allowing participants to work together to broaden understanding of disparities in this area. With the expectation of strict confidentiality, participants will collaborate in groups of two to three to practice skills through low-fidelity simulation with colleagues from similar yet distinct settings and contexts.
