Gamification Principles, Execution, and Updates to Novel Paradigms
Gamification is a commonly used learner engagement strategy in medical education that aims to promote information retention, attendance, and wellness. The predominant tools used for this purpose in residency curricula are game show models (Jeopardy) and audience response systems, both of which provide only limited benefits compared to conventional content review strategies.
In 2022, presenters introduced a novel model to review educational content in the classroom that was built on board-game design paradigms. This year, we aim to share model implementations and customizations employed successfully at multiple residency programs. In addition, presenters will cover essential components of educational game design that promote reinforcement learning as well as sustained feelings of reward, engagement, and replayability.
