Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Residency Education: Two Novel Initiatives

A critical need exists for internal medicine residency programs to truly espouse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in trainee/faculty recruitment andretention, patient care, and community engagement. However, challenges exist in instituting such DEI efforts, including demanding schedules, disproportionate burden on current underrepresented-in-medicine (UIM) trainees/faculty, and discontinuity due to annual resident turnover. This workshop challenges chief residents to explore avenues to improve DEI within their institutions and presents a four-pillar approach to DEI that does not place disproportionate burden on UIM trainees/faculty, but instead engages with all trainees. Specifically, the workshop allows chief residents to learn about DEI initiatives from two large university based programs, including a GME-wide minority house staff council; a resident-led Physicians for Advocacy and Community Engagement (PACE) group that promotes advocacy work for the IM program; a longitudinal curriculum that involves workshops on bias mitigation, discrimination/mistreatment, and advocacy within the medical community; a , Community & Society conference series; an advocacy elective; and Inclusion and Diversity committee (iMIND), resulting in initiatives to recruit UIM applicants, create an inclusive work environment for trainees, incorporate DEI topics into existing educational frameworks, and engage with the community via longitudinal service partnerships in a way that is non-burdensome to trainee schedules.
