Development and Gamification of Longitudinal Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Resident Curriculum
Quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) competency at the resident level continues to expand; executing a longitudinal curriculum for residents is a "must-have" skill for every resident. Curriculum on fundamental QI/PS concepts has been a formal classroom based endeavor. Our workshop will help participants develop and implement a longitudinal QI/PS curriculum that spans the full three years of internal medicine resident training. Through a combination of case-based, longitudinal lecture and gamification examples, we will show participants how to increase resident participation and knowledge retainment, as well as to drive positive institution-wide culture change regarding QI/PS. This workshop hopes to show the value in the move away from lecture based training to development of a focused project.
Within the project, QI tools are utilized to evaluate a broken process and develop an improvement that meets the needs of the root cause while driving relevant institutional measures and increasing resident scholarship. Our process of individualized QI/PS project coaching and use of a centralized project database will also be discussed. This curriculum serves as a template for chief residents and program directors to use and adapt for their own institutions so that they can better support their residents in their understanding and application of QI/PS principles thereby making them more valuable to future employers.
