RISE and Shine: Promoting Resident-Student Collaboration in Goal Setting and Feedback
RISE and Shine: Promoting Resident-Student Collaboration in Goal Setting and Feedback
Course Overview
This interactive workshop is designed to introduce RISE and Shine, a structured format for goal setting and feedback between medical students and residents on the inpatient medicine service. The program is founded on evidence-based principles, and encourages residents to:
R - Reflect on the week (ask students to share their reflections);
I - Inform the student of their observations;
S - Set a new goal together applying the I-SMART structure;
E - Encourage student growth by providing real-time feedback related to this goal throughout the week.
These steps provide the foundation for students to "shine" as a result of reinforcing and constructive feedback over time.
The workshop will introduce attendees to the RISE and Shine program and demonstrate aspects of the resident skills curriculum developed for implementation of RISE and Shine. The curriculum focuses on: creating a teacher-learner alliance, setting achievable learner-centric weekly goals, providing effective feedback, and using feedback as a tool for growth. There will be a brief didactic component reviewing evidence-based methods to providing effective feedback and interactive exercises to practice setting goals and giving feedback using video simulation cases.
Learning Objectives
- Promote a positive climate for feedback in which residents engage with students in a teacher-learner alliance, embracing feedback as a tool for growth.
- Implement a resident curriculum on coaching students to set appropriate and actionable goals that incorporate a plan for ongoing feedback.
- Introduce a program that teaches residents to provide learner-centered, timely, specific, objective and growth-oriented feedback to students across a range of clinical skills and learner proficiency levels
