An Approach to Addressing Microaggression and Harassment in the Resident Continuity Clinic Learning Environment

Microaggression and harassment events have negative impacts on the resident continuity clinic learning environment. These events are often underreported by trainees. To facilitate resident reporting of these events, improve leadership response to these events, and provide education and coaching for residents, we developed a residency continuity clinic learning environment policy. The goal of this policy is to provide residents with a clear process for addressing and reporting events that cause discomfort, provide guidance to preceptors for how they may manage these situations, and establish expectations for how clinic leadership responds to these events. In this session, we will review our policy and we will discuss how we use this policy as a framework to help train residents how to respond to these events. We will provide specific case examples and we will discuss how you may apply it to your learning environment.
