We Integrated Diversity, Equity & Inclusion into the Curriculum, Now What? Planning DEI Assessment for Any Level of Medical Trainee

The medical education community recently created many curricular elements in DEI to meet the needs of trainees, yet a paucity of assessments continues to plague DEI education. Tasked with the crucial next step in instruction, educators must now create effective assessment strategies for measuring the development of learner DEI knowledge, attitudes, and skills across the stages of medical education. Many find this process challenging because DEI education is complex, integrating skills across multiple competency domains, and because clinician educators may lack confidence in their own DEI expertise. In this interactive workshop, we will introduce approaches to DEI assessment using Miller's Pyramid of Clinical Competence. Our multidisciplinary team will present our collective experience creating DEI assessments in medical school, residency, and fellowship training programs. We will discuss tools - such as the AAMC DEI Competencies across the Learning Continuum and Entrustable Professional Activities - alongside our experience using interprofessional-, reflection-, simulation-, and workplace-based DEI assessments. Participants will receive a reference list and worksheet to match their curricular learning objectives with appropriate assessment methods according to Miller's framework, will design strategies for DEI assessment in medical training programs, and will receive feedback on their plans through a combination of small and large group discussions. Participants will leave the workshop with an enriched understanding of DEI assessment and a toolkit to assist the implementation of DEI assessments in their programs.
