Upper Level Bootcamp: Transitioning to Your Role as PGY2

The month of June is often full of excitement and anticipation as new interns join the residency program while current PGY-1s prepare for their new role as PGY-2 residents. This workshop aims to inspire chief residents and program directors to design a curriculum that focuses on the skills brand new "upper levels" need to successfully become efficient team leaders, resident educators, and feedback givers while equipping residents with tools to navigate night float independently, lead code blue events, and approach common emergent situations with emphasis on when to ask for help. We will discuss our program's experience with role-switching between interns and residents for the month of June, the use of a "rising PGY-2 checklist" to ensure preparedness and identifying learners in need, the utilization of mock codes for resident education and communication, and the utility of allocating protected time for quality improvement project brainstorming. We will discuss the benefits and limitations of daily one to two hour teaching sessions spread over a one-week period. Our workshop will also cover "bite-sized" teaching, using the think-pair-share method and tips on giving a chalk talk that caters to medical students and residents at different levels of their training. Finally, we will share the checklist, tip sheets, sample chalk talks, PowerPoint slides and mock code cases we developed for our "Upper-Level Bootcamp" so that our curriculum can be used as a guide and template for university and community-based programs to support their interns as they transition to their new roles as senior residents.
