Unconventional Ideas to Jump Start Your Next 5 Star Didactic Teaching Session
When creating a didactic teaching session, many medical educators start with a content area (often a disease process) and then build a lecture out of subtopics related to that content area. Following this traditional approach often leads to an uninventive didactic session that is unlikely to resonate with today's medical learners. At our workshop, we will show you how adjusting the format of your lectures can help you model important behaviors, maintain the attention of your audience, and create a memorable session. We will model 10 unconventional frameworks for lectures that you can apply to your own content. Examples of lecture frameworks we will demonstrate include "WTH!," "learning the easy way from my mistakes," "mythbusters," "pearl diving," and "controversial topic debate". We will examine why these alternative lecture frameworks are more effective for today's medical learners and how they also impart "hidden curriculum" lessons beyond the content you deliver. Workshop attendees will collaborate in generating innovative ideas for lecture formats and develop a list of didactic ideas that highlight their individual strengths and goals. Attendees will leave this workshop prepared to improve their didactic teaching immediately.
