Overview
The rapid advancement of informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing healthcare, necessitating their integration into medical education. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) mandates that training programs evaluate residents on digital health skills, including panel management and electronic medical record (EMR) system improvements. However, current education often includes only a few sessions to introduce and personalize EMR profiles. Burnout surveys frequently indicate that technology contributes significantly to stress due to unfamiliarity with electronic health records, time-consuming data entry, and administrative burdens. To prepare physicians for this new era and enhance their learning experience, we have developed a two-week rotation for second-year internal medicine residents. This workshop shares our framework for building and implementing a digital health innovation rotation, a multidisciplinary experience with three pillars: Informatics, AI, and the systematic application of learned skills through a capstone project. The ultimate goal is to create a generation of doctors who are tech-savvy, data-driven, and patient-focused, leading to a more efficient, effective, and compassionate healthcare system. We will present our modules, informatics efficiency and proficiency tools, AI applications, and five capstone projects. Additionally, we will share pre- and post-rotation data and provide a comprehensive guide for formulating your own curriculum to integrate digital innovation into your program using available resources.
