Getting the Right People AND the Right Seats on the Bus: Strategies for Creating a Higher-Functioning Residency Leadership Team
Details

Overview

This interactive workshop will help program leaders assess and optimize their leadership team structure to better align with program needs and goals. We will begin with a brief overview of ACGME FTE requirements for Associate Program Directors (APDs) and core faculty, followed by a comparison of common leadership models (e.g., site-specific, task-specific, hybrid). Participants will individually map out their current leadership team structure, then engage in small-group discussions to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different organizational approaches. Using guided reflection, participants will identify areas of duplication, under-delegation, or unassigned responsibilities in their own programs. The second half of the workshop will focus on team management and optimization strategies. We will introduce practical approaches to improve personnel alignment, balance workloads, clarify expectations, and address interpersonal challenges within leadership teams. Participants will then reflect on opportunities to redistribute roles and enhance team cohesion. The final section will emphasize aligning leadership tasks with forward-looking program goals. Participants will evaluate whether current tasks support strategic priorities, and explore opportunities for realignment or innovation. Attendees will leave with an action plan to strengthen and future-proof their leadership teams.
