From A to Zillennial: A Crash Course in Digital Education
Details

Overview

The 21st century has witnessed a digital media education revolution. The ways that learners access medical information have changed, with free open access medical education including podcasts, infographics, and videos. We discuss key principles of being a digital educator, focusing on creating digital educational products. The presenters of this workshop are current academic hospitalists with expertise in digital media as demonstrated by their work on the leading medical education podcast, The Curbsiders. For the graphic design section, attendees will be given examples of infographics and visual abstracts. In breakout sessions, attendees will assess examples and identify features that make them effective and then follow up with group discussion, to learn best practices regarding the organization, font selection, color theory and use of icons and illustrations. Free and open access resources where attendees can learn practical skills, including visual abstract templates, will also be shared. In the audio and video (AV) delivery section of the workshop, attendees will review prerecorded AV samples featuring the spectrum of audio and video quality. This will help illustrate the impact of AV quality on the listener’s ability to consume educational content. Participants will identify best practices in AV delivery, including recording environment, microphone and camera placement, background optimization, and lighting.
