Overview
This faculty development workshop presents a five-step framework for building career success on a foundation of personal fulfillment: CORE-2 (Character strengths, Overall vision, Role assessment, Explicit goals, Evaluation). Step 1 is identification of character strengths: positive traits reflected in thoughts, feelings, and actions. Presenters explain how leveraging character strengths leads to flourishing and how flourishing is a prerequisite to career success. Participants identify their signature strengths from the 24 Values in Action Character Strengths during the first self-reflection activity. Step 2 is creation of a professional vision statement (PVS) aligned with signature character strengths. Presenters describe the rationale for a PVS and its ideal features and share their own PVS; participants create a rough draft of their PVS during the second self-reflection activity. Step 3 is evaluation of current and desired professional roles. Example roles include clinician, scholar, educator, and patient advocate. Step 4 is development of SMART goals for each professional role, organized around a one- and five-year timeline. Presenters define the components of SMART goals and the evidence supporting their effectiveness in professional development and share their own SMART goals; participants develop their own SMART goals during the third self-reflection activity. Step 5 is evaluation: regular reflection, revision, and recommitment to character strengths, PVS, professional roles, and corresponding SMART goals to maintain a sense of flourishing.
