Overview
Specialty career advising is increasingly complex. In an era where student affairs t is faced with constantly evolving specialty applications, the need for nuanced, internal medicine-specific career advising has become crucial. Simultaneously, as schools expand their class size and students continue to apply to more than one specialty, many career advisers are working with an increasing number of students and students are often requesting more time and guidance from the career advisors. Perhaps due to these factors, there has been an increase in unsatisfactory performance concerns for career advising from LCME. This workshop will share examples of effective career advising teams and tools from institutions varying in size and type to find means to deliver an appropriate amount of support to medical students applying into internal medicine residency programs in a manner that feels sustainable. Presenters will explore collaborative models of department-based and student affairs-based advising, emphasizing the need for role delineation for activities including MSPE development, mock interviews, and personalized advising. The workshop will highlight the clerkship administrator role as a pivotal component in organizing and streamlining processes to ensure efficient and effective career advising is in place for all internal medicine bound medical students. Participants will be asked to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of their current system and then work together to brainstorm opportunities for growth and efficiencies to draft revisions to their programs.
