Overview
The remediation of learners who are struggling requires a multi-pronged and collaborative approach that involves various roles on a team. There are various ways to categorize a learner's deficits. Using experiences and a practical framework identifying learner ability and engagement, the workshop goal is to develop an approach to challenging remediations. The residency program collaborates with clinical skills coaches who are not directly involved in program leadership to provide personalized remediation to learners. Presenters will describe this collaborative resource to support learners who are struggling, share perspectives (including testimonies from those who have undergone coaching), and discuss strengths and future aspirations. The workshop will introduce a framework to classify learners who are struggling in a 2x2 matrix of "willingness to engage in remediation" (x-axis) and "clinical ability" (y-axis), simplified as "will v. skill." For each of the four quadrants, participants will work in groups to envision this type of learner, anticipate challenges, and construct a coaching and remediation plan. Following these discussions, participants will be presented with concrete, challenging examples based on real scenarios. These examples will highlight unique factors for training programs to consider in faculty and staff support, trainee background, competency assessment, and program structure. The workshop will conclude with Q&A and opportunity to share experiences as a large group.
