Overview
Dedicated teaching time in residency is vital, but how can the standard lecture compete nowadays? With the rise of "edutainment" on social media the way today's residents learn medicine is changing. For many learners, videos and podcasts have replaced textbooks and review articles as first line educational resources. Despite this evolution, conventional didactic conferences remain the bulk of most programs' educational curriculums. The feedback received is that sitting through an academic monologue is a chore and a bore. In this workshop, participants will be inspired to shift the focus away from standard lectures and instead, to more effectively use conference time by creating engaging educational experiences. Participants will learn the difference between interactive, entertaining, and engaging experiences and which is key for learner satisfaction. Presenters will discuss how choosing unexpected medical topics, varying styles of information delivery, inviting residents to practice skills, and reinventing what an educational conference can lead residents to actually want to attend the conference. Specifically, presenters will share more than a dozen different engaging educational experiences created to revitalize conferences and how the techniques used can be applied to most other medical topics as well. Additionally, workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience snippets of several engaging educational experiences and brainstorm even more ideas in a large group setting. Each participant will leave with detailed, practical instructions or examples of how they might be able to recreate these experiences in their own programs.
