Overview
Those who work in management and leadership roles know the challenges that may come up within in the office setting and work with their team to make adjustments and improvements to ensure successful business operations. However, managing and leading a team through challenges, such as an employee having a sudden severe illness or even death, can be a very challenging and emotional time for everyone. It is not something that taught how to handle during education and professional training to become managers and leaders. How do leaders react when they receive the news that a staff member has passed away suddenly and how best to support teams and the employee's family? Many questions and conversations come up during this type of event and how the situation is managed makes all the difference to cope and process how to move forward. Who will do the work, what about their office space and belongings, and when to post and fill their position? Stressful situations can create sadness, anxiety, depression, grief, anger, stress, and other emotions for the entire team. The presenters experienced this situation in November 2023 when a long-time employee suddenly passed away. This workshop will discuss the challenges faced as a team and how managers and leaders at the division and department level supported the faculty, staff, each other as leaders, and the employee' family during a challenging and emotional event to ensure employee wellness by "taking care of our own."
