Afterglow or Aftermath? Navigating the Period after Feedback Conversations
Details

Overview
For educators and learners, much of the work around feedback focuses on the smorgasbord of feedback delivery: the sandwich, the sprinkles. Its is especially true in difficult conversations with struggling learners or with learners who have a disconnect between what they believe to be true and what they are hearing. Long gaps between observations and limited contact time further complicate the processes of following up on feedback in the clinic and on the wards. Sometimes these conversations go well, and the post-feedback response is productive. Sometimes, despite best effort to give actionable and specific feedback, the learner does not incorporate the feedback and continues the prior behaviors. Are there specific things that educators can do to foster the mindset necessary to conceptualize feedback as an opportunity for growth? And what can faculty do when our learners just cannot engage? This workshop is specifically designed to address the often-overlooked aspect of feedback in medical education: what happens after the feedback is given. The crucial immediate post-feedback period can significantly influence learner growth and development. This highly interactive workshop will give faculty the opportunity to practice specific skills in a case-based format. Presenters will draw parallels to the clinical practices of motivational interviewing and delivering bad news, both of which draw attention to process, planning and follow-up.  Presenters will also distribute resources to train clerkship faculty and leadership on how to encourage and support growth mindset in the learning environment as it relates to feedback and professional development.
