Intentionally Changing the Experience that IM Residents have with Patient Deaths: Guidelines, Checklists, and Workflows to Impact Positive Change
Details

Overview

Understanding and processing the complex emotions that arise from caring for dying patients is a critical step in the professional development of an internal medicine resident physician. Few studies examine how we support trainees and their supervisors and provide them with the skills to process the complex emotions surrounding patient deaths.  Through this workshop, we will discuss various innovative strategies implemented at our institution to better support residents and faculty during these challenging times. We will discuss debriefing frameworks and current initiatives.  Additionally, we will help participants brainstorm strategies for processing the loss of a patient that fit their institution.  We hope to create more evidence-based educational materials and polices that support our trainees in their professional development, self-reflection and self-care.
