Overview
Turnover in leadership teams and faculty roles is a challenge common to residency programs. The window for hiring new APDs, core faculty (CF), or other vital residency leadership positions is often tight. Competing programmatic priorities, demands, and logistics can feel daunting for program leadership. Program stakeholders may frequently rely on convenience or personal networks when selecting individuals for these pivotal roles. Yet, such practices can inhibit inclusion of new perspectives and perpetuate inequitable leadership structures. This workshop will share perspectives and processes from three residency programs used in the selection of APDs and CF. Presenters will provide equitable strategies and practical tips to navigate selection planning, application review, interviews, and final hiring. The workshop will also explore approaches to standardizing funding, programmatic needs, roles/responsibilities, CF expectations, performance metrics and term limits as additional variables that may impact hiring and transitions. Facilitators will highlight how attendees can evaluate their program needs to determine APD or CF job structure. Through facilitator-guided breakouts, participants will discuss challenges experienced when bringing new faculty into residency leadership. In addition, participants will practice reviewing application materials, and discuss with other attendees their impressions of example candidates. Participants will leave with innovative ideas on how to replicate these processes.Speakers
