Reaching Across The Aisle: The Benefits of Innovative Residency Partnerships
Details

Overview
Many residencies struggle with curricular and experiential learning gaps. The ACGME requires every internal medicine resident have at least six months of individualized educational experiences relevant to their future practice or skill development in foundational areas, which is challenging for programs that lack resources to build tailored electives or offer enhanced subspecialty rotations. At the same time, institutions with unique missions and patients – including well-resourced programs – may leave residents wanting more… broader exposure to different patient populations, clinical learning/work styles, and team-based care models. For optimal career development and alignment, equitable outcomes, and long-term job satisfaction, programs must find innovative ways to expand learning opportunities for their residents. For this reason, the internal medicine residencies at Mayo Clinic and Hennepin County Medical Center entered into a formal educational partnership in 2022, developing a novel exchange program that allows residents at both sites to do away electives to augment their preparation for specialties or general practice and gain exposure to diverse, unique patient populations and research opportunities. Research is particularly challenging for programs that don't have fellowships in certain specialties particularly competitive specialties. Additional benefits of the bidirectional exchange include increased community between programs, knowledge sharing, and mitigating curricular gaps. We will have a diverse panel of program leadership, residents, and chiefs discuss the nuances and logistics for a successful partnership, and provide practical tips to develop similar relationships. Participants will walk away from this session with strategies to fill curricular and elective gaps.
