Transmitting Your Program's Culture in the Age of Virtual Interviewing: A How to Guide for Second Look Visits
Details

Overview
Residency programs shifted to virtual interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic due to travel restrictions. Subsequent studies on this interview format have highlighted benefits such as increased equity, reduction of travel costs, and environmental consciousness. However, applicants find it hard to gauge a program's culture based on the limited and highly structured interactions that take place virtually. These drawbacks are problematic as data released by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) shows that students see the "fit of the program" as their top consideration when choosing a residency. Second-look visits are an alternative to complement the virtual interview day to showcase a program's culture. In this workshop, we will start by reviewing the effects of the transition to virtual interviews. We will then share our experience designing and implementing a second-look visit for the internal medicine residency program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We will discuss best practices to maintain the equity of the process, review the structure of the visit, and share results from our post-visit survey detailing applicants' perceived barriers and benefits of attending a second look visit. We will conclude by sharing survey data highlighting the potential effects of these visits on applicant's ranking decisions.
